Building for the Web: A Conversation with CrazyGames
CrazyGames has been a pioneer in the web gaming space, building a platform that serves millions of players. We sat down with their team to discuss the evolution of browser-based gaming and where they see the industry heading.
Q: What made you bet on web gaming early on?
We saw that the browser was becoming incredibly powerful, but the gaming ecosystem had not caught up. There was a gap between what was technically possible and what was actually available to players. We wanted to fill that gap by curating and promoting the best browser games.
Q: What is the biggest challenge in web game development today?
Discovery is still the number one challenge. Unlike app stores, there is no single dominant marketplace for web games. Platforms like Poki and CrazyGames help solve this, but the ecosystem would benefit from more standardisation around discoverability -- something like Open Graph tags specifically designed for games.
Q: Where do you see web gaming in five years?
We believe web games will eventually surpass mobile apps in terms of casual gaming sessions. The technology is already there. What needs to catch up is mindset -- both among developers, who still default to mobile, and among players, who are just beginning to discover how good web games have become.
